Election Day Voting

Polling places are open from 630am to 730pm on Election Day.

Early Voting

Any registered voter may vote in person at the county courthouse or annex beginning 13 days before the election and ending 3 days before the election. Some counties offer additional early voting locations

Early voting is typically available on weekdays during regular business hours and on Saturdays from 9am to 5pm. ​

Absentee Voting

A registered voter may vote absentee provided they will be absent from their place of voting on Election Day and meet one of the following criteria:

  • You are away due to personal or business travel.
  • You are in attendance at college, university or other place of education or training
  • You are confined due to illness, injury or other medical reason
  • You are immobile due to advanced age or a physical disability.
  • You are incarcerated or in detention in jail or home and not convicted of a felony
  • Your employment because of hours worked and distance from the county seat makes voting in person impossible
  • You are a participant in the Address Confidentiality Program (ACP) with the Office of the Secretary of State
  • The county absentee voting office and your polling place are inaccessible to you due to your physical disability
  • You are required to live temporarily outside county of residence because of service as an elected or appointed state or federal officer
  • You are required to live temporarily outside county of residence because of temporary assignment by your employer for a specific period of four years or less

You are eligible to vote in West Virginia if you:

  • Are a U.S citizen
  • Are at least 18 years old by Election Day
  • Reside in West Virginia and the parish in which you want to vote

You are NOT eligible to vote in West Virginia if:

  • You have been legally declared "mentally incompetent" by a court
  • You are on parole for a felony conviction or convicted of a felony

You may preregister to vote in West Virginia

  • at 17 years of age and provided you will be 18 by the next general election.

Student Eligibility

If you are a student, you are eligible to vote in West Virginia if:

  • You reside in West Virginia but are attending college in another state
  • You reside in another state but attend college in West Virginia
  • You provide a valid photo student ID from a college/university at the polls

Voter Registration

To register to vote in West Virginia you should provide one of the following:

  • Last Four Digits of your Social Security Number
  • Your West Virginia Driver's License Number
  • Your West Virginia ID Number

If you are registering to vote for the first time by mail, you will need to provide a copy of a valid ID. Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • Current and Valid Photo ID
  • Utility Bill, Bank Statement, Government Check, or Paycheck that Shows your current name and address
  • Government Issued Document that shows your current name and address

You can alternatively show one of these documents when you vote to complete your registration.

Voting In-Person

You are required to show voter ID in West Virginia. You can use any ID from this list:

  • Utility Bill
  • Bank Statement
  • Government Issued Document that shows your Current Name and Address
  • Hunting or Fishing ID
  • Medicare or Medicaid Card issued by the government
  • Social Security Card
  • Birth Certificate
  • Valid West Virginia Voter ID Card
  • Insurance Plan ID Card
  • Utility Bill
  • Valid Federal issued ID
  • Valid Student ID
  • Valid West Virginia issued ID
  • Valid West Virginia Driver's License
  • TANF ID card
  • License to Carry Concealed Weapon or Firearm
  • Valid US Passport

In some situations a voter without ID may sign an affidavit affirming identification.
