While there is no voter registration in North Dakota, you must have resided in your precinct at least 30 days prior to the election in which you intend to vote.

Polling places are open from 7am to 7pm on Election Day.

Absentee Voting

Any qualified elector may request an absentee ballot. Absentee ballots are generally available 40 days prior to an election.

You are eligible to vote in North Dakota if you:

  • Are a U.S citizen
  • Are a resident of North Dakota
  • Are at least 18 years old by Election Day
  • Live in the precinct where you vote for at least 30 days prior to the election

Student Eligibility

If you are a student, you are eligible to vote in North Dakota if:

  • You reside in North Dakota but are attending college in another state
  • You reside in another state but attend college in North Dakota
  • North Dakota does not accept student ID; refer to North Dakota Identification Requirements section

Voter Registration

There is no voter registration in North Dakota.

Voting In-Person

You are required to show ID to vote; or, you may instead sign an affidavit or similar document. Accepted forms of ID include:

  • Valid North Dakota Driver's License
  • Long Term Care ID Certificate
  • Valid North Dakota Non-driver's ID
  • Valid Tribal ID

If address or date of birth information is incomplete, an individual may supplement the identification with a current utility bill; a current bank statement; a check or a document issued by a federal, state, local, or tribal government; or a paycheck.
