Early Voting

A registered voter may vote early via an absentee ballot cast at your county auditor's office. Contact your local office to inquire about early voting options for specific elections.

Absentee Voting

Any registered voter may request an absentee ballot and vote by mail.

You are eligible to vote in Iowa if you:

  • Are a U.S citizen
  • Are a resident of Iowa
  • Are at least 18 years old by Election Day

You are NOT eligible to vote in Iowa if:

  • You have been legally declared "mentally incompetent" by a court
  • You are registered to vote in another state

Restorative Requirements

  • You are a convicted felon involving moral turpitude, unless your voting rights have been restored.

You may preregister to vote in Iowa

  • at the age of 17-1/2

Student Eligibility

If you are a student, you are eligible to vote in Iowa if:

  • You reside in Iowa but are attending college in another state
  • You reside in another state but attend college in Iowa
  • You provide a valid photo student ID from a college/university at the polls

Voter Registration

To register to vote in Iowa you should provide one of the following:

  • The Last Four Digits of your Social Security Number
  • Your Iowa Driver's License or State/non-driver ID Number

You can alternatively show one of these documents when you vote to complete your registration.

If you do not have this form of ID(s), Iowa will also accept:

  • Valid Employee ID
  • Valid Student ID
  • Valid US Passport
  • Valid Military ID
  • Out of State Driver's License or Non-driver ID
  • Valid non-driver's ID
  • Valid Tribal ID

IDs presented must be valid and contain an expiration date

If your ID does not contain your current address, you may use the following documents to show proof of residence:

  • Utility Bill, Bank Statement, Government Check, or Paycheck that Shows your current name and address
  • Government Issued Document that shows your current name and address
  • Lease or rent agreement

Voting In-Person

If you are registered to vote in Iowa, in certain cases you may be required to show ID to vote. Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • Paycheck that shows your Current Name and Address
  • Current and Valid Photo ID
  • Utility Bill
  • Bank Statement
  • Government Check
  • Government Issued Document that shows your Current Name and Address
